Sileo Gel (Dexmedetomidine) for Dogs

This is a prescription medication. Before purchasing it, your veterinarian must have issued a prescription. Always give as directed by your veterinarian. Keep out of reach of children and pets, and store as directed. This information is not intended to replace advice from your veterinarian.

Sileo Gel is a prescription medication used to alleviate anxiety and fear in dogs caused by loud noises, such as fireworks and thunderstorms. It is administered as a gel and designed to be applied to the inner lining of the dog's cheek, allowing for direct absorption. It works by reducing the release of stress-related chemicals which helps decrease the physical and behavioural signs of anxiety and fear in dogs.

Active Ingredient:

Each syringe contains 3ml of 0.1mg/ml Dexmedetomidine

Additional Information:

Understanding Sileo Oromucosal Gel for Dogs

Sileo® is an oromucosal gel for dogs designed to alleviate acute anxiety and fear associated with noise. It contains the active ingredient dexmedetomidine hydrochloride, a well-known alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist used for its sedative and anxiolytic effects.

What Causes Noise-Related Anxiety in Dogs?

Noise-related anxiety in dogs can be triggered by fireworks, thunderstorms, and other loud noises. The fear response can include panting, trembling, hiding, and other stress-related behaviours. Sileo works by mimicking the calming effects of alpha-2 adrenoceptor stimulation in the brain.

Signs and Symptoms of Noise-Related Anxiety

Dogs affected by noise-related anxiety may exhibit signs such as panting, shaking, seeking comfort from their owners, hiding, attempting to escape, and in some cases, inappropriate weeing and pooing, or destructive behaviour.

How is Noise-Related Anxiety Treated?

Sileo gel is administered between the dog’s cheek and gum, allowing for rapid absorption and quick onset of action. It should be used as directed by a veterinarian and is intended for oromucosal use only, not for ingestion.

Monitoring and Care at Home

After administering Sileo, monitor your dog for any signs of excessive sedation or adverse reactions. Keep your dog in a comfortable, warm place, and avoid offering food or water until the medication's effects have worn off.

Prognosis

When used as directed, Sileo is effective in managing noise-related anxiety and fear in dogs, allowing them to remain calm during stressful situations. The prognosis for dogs treated with Sileo for noise aversion is generally very good.

Preventative Care

To prevent noise-related anxiety, plan ahead by identifying potential noise triggers and administer Sileo 30-60 minutes before the expected noise event. Ensure your dog is in a safe, secure place where they feel comfortable.
