Additional Information

Understanding Rimadyl (Carprofen) for Dogs

Carprofen, marketed under the trade name Rimadyl®, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for managing chronic and acute pain and inflammation in dogs. This medication provides a vital tool for veterinarians and pet owners in improving the quality of life for dogs suffering from conditions such as arthritis and other painful disorders.

What Causes Pain and Inflammation in Dogs?

Pain and inflammation in dogs can be triggered by a variety of conditions, including osteoarthritis, post-operative pain, and injuries. These conditions lead to the production of prostaglandins, which cause inflammation and pain. Carprofen works by inhibiting the synthesis of these prostaglandins, thus reducing inflammation and pain.

Signs and Symptoms of Pain and Inflammation

Dogs experiencing pain may show signs such as limping, difficulty moving, decreased activity, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, and changes in behaviour like increased aggression or withdrawal. Inflammation may not be directly observable but can manifest through swelling or redness in specific areas, depending on the underlying cause.

How is Pain and Inflammation Treated?

Carprofen, as found in Rimadyl Chewable Tablets, is prescribed for the relief of pain and inflammation in dogs. The dose is determined by your vet and is administered once daily or divided into two doses. It's crucial to follow the veterinarian's directions closely and monitor the dog for any side effects. Rimadyl should be administered with food unless otherwise advised by your vet.

Monitoring and Care at Home

While your dog is on Rimadyl, observe them for any adverse reactions such as changes in appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, or changes in behaviour. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to monitor your dog's response to the medication and adjust the dosage if necessary.

Prognosis

The prognosis for dogs on Rimadyl is generally positive, with many experiencing significant relief from pain and inflammation. However, individual responses can vary, and ongoing monitoring is crucial.

Preventative Care

Preventing pain and inflammation involves maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise tailored to the dog’s condition, and early intervention in case of injuries or signs of joint issues. Consultation with a veterinarian for regular check-ups and discussion about the benefits and risks of NSAIDs like Carprofen is also advised.
