Pexion® Tablets for Dogs

Available Strengths:

  • Pexion® 100 mg Tablets
  • Pexion® 400 mg Tablets

Active Ingredient: Imepitoin (100 mg or 400 mg per tablet)

Indications:

  • Epilepsy: Pexion® is an antiepileptic agent intended for use as an aid in the treatment of idiopathic epilepsy in dogs.
  • Noise Phobia: Pexion® is also indicated for the reduction of anxiety and fear associated with noise phobia in dogs.

Dosage and Administration:

Give as directed by your veterinarian

  • Epilepsy Treatment: Pexion® is administered orally twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. The initial dosage may be adjusted based on the individual needs of the dog and the severity of the condition. The product can be given with or without food, though studies indicate superior absorption in fasted dogs. Consistency in the timing of administration in relation to feeding is recommended.
  • Noise Phobia Treatment: For noise phobia, Pexion® is administered orally at a higher dosage, twice daily, starting two days before the expected noise event and continuing through the noise period.

Contraindications:

  • Pexion® should not be used in dogs with known hypersensitivity to imepitoin.
  • It is contraindicated in dogs suffering from severely impaired hepatic function, severe renal, or severe cardiovascular disorders.

Side Effects: During clinical studies, the following mild and transient adverse reactions were observed: increased appetite, hyperactivity, increased thirst and urination, drowsiness, excessive salivation, vomiting, unsteadiness, lack of appetite, lethargy, disorientation, diarrhoea, third eyelid prolapse, and temporary visual impairment. In rare cases, increased aggression or sensitivity to sounds may occur in epileptic dogs, possibly as part of a behaviour change related to the underlying epilepsy.

In the treatment of noise phobia, transient unsteadiness (ataxia) was reported in approximately one-third of dogs due to the higher starting dose recommended for this condition. This typically resolves as the dog adjusts to the medication.

Precautions:

  • Use during reproduction, pregnancy, or lactation should be determined by a veterinarian, based on a benefit/risk assessment.
  • Careful consideration should be given before switching a dog stabilised on another antiepileptic medication to Pexion®. Such transitions should be made gradually and with veterinary supervision.
  • Long-term use does not induce drug tolerance, and abrupt cessation of therapy does not result in withdrawal symptoms.
  • The product should not be used as a primary treatment in dogs with cluster seizures or status epilepticus. Emergency treatment for these conditions may require alternative therapies such as short-acting benzodiazepines or general anaesthesia.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place.

First Aid: If poisoning occurs, seek immediate medical advice or contact the Poisons Information Centre 0800 764 766 (0800 POISON)

Additional Safety Information: Pexion® should be used with care as it may be harmful if swallowed and can cause irritation to the eyes. Hands should be washed after handling the product, and care should be taken to avoid contact with eyes.
