Optimmune® Ophthalmic Ointment

Active Ingredient:
2 mg/g Cyclosporin

Indications:
Optimmune® Ophthalmic Ointment is formulated for the treatment of idiopathic chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) in dogs.

Dosage and Administration:
Before applying Optimmune, remove any debris from the affected eye(s) using a suitable non-irritating solution.

  • Give as directed by your veterinarian.
  • For KCS, apply a 6 mm strip of the ointment to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours.
  • For CSK, apply a 6-10 mm strip of the ointment to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours.

Administer the ointment directly onto the cornea or into the conjunctival sac. Dogs suffering from KCS or CSK may require lifelong treatment. Continue treatment as long as necessary to control symptoms.

Precautions:
For the best results in treating KCS, begin therapy early in the disease’s progression to prevent irreversible damage to the lacrimal tissue and avoid severe corneal scarring or pigmentation.

  • Optimmune® should not be used if there are pre-existing viral or fungal infections of the eye; treatment should only start once such infections have been successfully managed.
  • The safety of Optimmune® in puppies, pregnant bitches, or dogs used for breeding has not been determined.
  • On rare occasions, application of the ointment may cause stinging. If this persists for more than 7 days, discontinue treatment and consult a vet.
Several days to a few weeks of regular application may be required to observe the full therapeutic effects. Abruptly stopping other therapies when starting Optimmune® can result in a rapid relapse of clinical symptoms.

Contraindications:
Avoid use if the dog has viral or fungal ocular infections.
The clinical effect of Optimmune® has not been evaluated in certain conditions, including congenital alacrima, sulfonamide use, canine distemper virus, metabolic disease, surgical removal of the third eyelid gland, or facial nerve paralysis. Rapid withdrawal of any prior therapeutic agent without careful monitoring can result in relapse of symptoms. Consult a vet before stopping other medications.

Storage:
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place (preferably with air conditioning) to maintain the efficacy of the product.

Disposal:
Dispose of the empty container by wrapping it in paper and placing it in the garbage.

Additional Information

Understanding KCS and CSK in Dogs

Chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), also known as dry eye, and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK), commonly referred to as pannus, are significant eye conditions that affect dogs. These conditions can lead to discomfort, reduced vision, and if untreated, potentially blindness. Optimmune® Ophthalmic Ointment, containing Cyclosporin as its active ingredient, offers a prescription-based solution to manage these eye problems effectively.

What Causes KCS and CSK?

KCS occurs when there's insufficient tear production to keep the eyes moist, leading to dry, irritated eyes. CSK involves the cornea's inflammation and can result in pigmentation and scarring. Factors contributing to these conditions include autoimmune diseases, genetic predisposition, and in some cases, infections or injuries.

Signs and Symptoms

The common signs of KCS include a dry appearance to the eye, discharge, redness, and frequent blinking or squinting. CSK symptoms encompass a cloudy or pigmented cornea, vision impairment, and eye irritation. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing these conditions.

How is Optimmune Ophthalmic Ointment Used?

Optimmune is specifically designed for the treatment of KCS and CSK in dogs. It works by increasing natural tear production and reducing inflammation. For KCS, a 6 mm strip of ointment is applied to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours. For CSK, a 6-10 mm strip is recommended for the same frequency. Continuous treatment may be necessary for the lifetime of the dog to manage these conditions effectively.

Monitoring and Care at Home

Regular monitoring by a veterinarian is essential to adjust treatment as needed. At home, owners should ensure the application of the ointment as prescribed and monitor their pet for any adverse reactions or improvement in symptoms.

Prognosis

With consistent treatment, the prognosis for dogs with KCS and CSK is generally good. Early intervention can prevent complications such as corneal scarring and vision loss.

Preventative Care

While some causes of KCS and CSK are genetic and cannot be prevented, maintaining good eye hygiene and protecting your dog’s eyes from injuries can help reduce the risk of developing these conditions.

FAQs Section

Can Optimmune cure KCS and CSK?

Optimmune is designed to manage symptoms and prevent progression but is not a cure. Lifelong treatment may be required.

Is Optimmune safe for all dogs?

Optimmune is safe for most dogs, but its use in puppies, pregnant bitches, or dogs used for breeding has not been determined.

How quickly does Optimmune work?

It may take several days to a few weeks before significant improvements are observed.

What should I do if my dog experiences stinging with Optimmune?

Stinging is uncommon and should subside within a week of treatment, however, if your pet is distressed, or if it persists, consult your veterinarian.

Can I stop using Optimmune® if my dog’s eyes improve?

Abrupt discontinuation can lead to relapse. Always follow your vet’s guidance.
