Description:

Incurin (Estriol)

This is a prescription medication. Before purchasing it, your veterinarian must have issued a prescription. Always give as directed by your veterinarian. Keep out of reach of children and pets, and store as directed. This information is not intended to replace advice from your veterinarian.

Incurin® 1mg Tablets

Active Ingredient: Estriol

Indications:
Incurin is indicated for the treatment of hormone-responsive urinary incontinence due to sphincter mechanism incompetence (SMI) in spayed female dogs.

Dosage and Administration:
Give as directed by your veterinarian.

For oral administration. The dose for each dog must be individually determined. Start with 1 tablet (1 mg) per day for 7-14 days. If effective, reduce to the lowest effective dose, with a minimum of half a tablet (0.5 mg) per day and a maximum dose of 2 tablets (2 mg) per day. Reassess every 6 months. Full details are provided in the enclosed leaflet.

Mode of Action:
Incurin is a form of short-acting oestrogen that enhances the muscle tone of the urethral sphincter. This improvement in muscle tone helps prevent urine leakage and incontinence.

Adverse Reactions:
Some mild oestrogenic effects may be observed, including swollen vulva, swollen teats, or attractiveness to males. These effects are reversible with dose adjustment. Rarely, nausea, vaginal bleeding, or alopecia may occur.

Warnings:
High doses of oestrogen may promote tumour development in target organs with oestrogen receptors.

Storage:
Store below 30°C. Keep locked up.

Available only under Veterinary Authorisation.

ACVM Registration No. A008094.

Active Ingredient:

Each tablet contains 1mg of Estriol

Additional Information

Understanding Incurin for Female Dogs

Incurin is a veterinary medicine used to treat hormone-responsive urinary incontinence resulting from sphincter mechanism incompetence (SMI) in female dogs, particularly those who have undergone ovariohysterectomy (spaying). This condition can lead to involuntary leakage of urine, causing distress for both the dog and the owner.

What Causes Hormone-Responsive Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence in spayed female dogs is often due to a reduction in estrogen levels following the removal of the ovaries. Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining the tone of the urethral sphincter. When its levels drop, the sphincter may weaken, leading to urine leakage.

Signs and Symptoms of Hormone-Responsive Urinary Incontinence

The primary symptom of this condition is involuntary leakage of urine, which may occur when the dog is resting or sleeping. Other signs include dampness on the bedding or floor where the dog has been lying, licking of the genital area more than usual, and possible skin irritation around the vulva due to prolonged exposure to urine.

How is Hormone-Responsive Urinary Incontinence Treated?

Incurin tablets, containing 1 mg of oestriol, are administered orally. The dosage is tailored to each dog, starting with one tablet per day. Depending on the response, the dosage may be adjusted. The treatment is lifelong, with periodic veterinary assessments recommended every six months.

Monitoring and Care at Home

Owners should monitor their dog's urine leakage and any side effects of the medication, adjusting the environment to manage incontinence (e.g., waterproof bedding). Regular veterinary visits are crucial for monitoring the dog's response to treatment and adjusting the dosage as needed.

Prognosis

With appropriate treatment, the prognosis for dogs with hormone-responsive urinary incontinence is generally good. Most dogs show improvement with proper medication, significantly improving their quality of life.

Preventative Care

While urinary incontinence due to sphincter mechanism incompetence is not entirely preventable, maintaining a healthy weight and regular veterinary check-ups can help manage the condition effectively if it occurs.
